Bulk barcode generator is an online tool that allows you to create many barcodes at once – up to 20 Code 128 barcodes per batch for free, up to 1,000 in all 15 formats with Pro. It enables you to import data from Excel spreadsheets, CSV files, or plain text, customize colors, size and text, and download PNG or SVG files – or the whole batch as a zip file with a free account.

CODE128 is one of the more versatile barcodes. It has support for all 128 ASCII characters but does also encode numbers efficiently.

EAN comes in a variety of forms, most commonly used is EAN-13 (GTIN-13) that is used on world wide to marking the identity of products.

CODE39 is an old barcode type that can encode numbers, uppercase letters and a number of special characters (-, ., $, /, +, %, and space). It has been a common barcode type in the past but CODE128 is recommended if not for legacy reasons.

ITF-14 (Interleaved Two of Five) is the GS1 implementation of an Interleaved 2 of 5 bar code to encode a Global Trade Item Number. ITF-14 symbols are generally used on packaging levels of a product, such as a case box of 24 cans of soup. The ITF-14 will always encode 14 digits.

MSI or Modified Plessey is a barcode developed by the MSI Data Corporation and is primarily used for inventory control, marking storage containers and shelves in warehouse environments. It supports digits 0-9.

Pharmacode is a barcode used in the pharmaceutical industry. It can encode numbers 3 to 131070.

Codabar is an old barcode type that can encode numbers and a number of special characters (-, $, :, /, +, and .).
You can set start and stop characters to A, B, C or D but if no start and stop character is defined A will be used.

What is a barcode?

A barcode is a machine-readable code consisting of numbers and a pattern of parallel lines of varying widths. It is used for identifying and tracking products and assets in a wide range of applications including retail, logistics, and inventory management.

How many barcodes can I generate at once?

On the free plan you can generate up to 20 Code 128 barcodes per batch. Pro lets you generate up to 1,000 barcodes per batch in all 15 formats. You can run as many batches as you need.

Can I generate barcodes from Excel or CSV?

Yes. Upload a CSV, XLS or XLSX file and the generator reads the values in column A of the first sheet, one barcode per row. The first row is treated as data, so remove any header row before uploading. You can also paste values directly, one per line.

Do I need an account?

You can generate barcodes and download them one by one without an account. Downloading a whole batch as a ZIP file requires signing in; a free account is enough.

What types of barcodes can Bulk Barcode Generator create?

15 formats in 7 families: Code 128; EAN-13, UPC, EAN-8, EAN-5 and EAN-2; Code 39; ITF-14; MSI, MSI10, MSI11, MSI1010 and MSI1110; Pharmacode; and Codabar. Free users can batch-generate Code 128; Pro users can batch-generate all formats. Every format can be generated one at a time for free on its own page.

Can I use the generated barcodes for commercial purposes?

Yes. There are no usage restrictions on the barcode images you create, so you can use them on products, packaging and documents.

Do the generated barcodes expire?

No. A barcode image is static and never expires. (Batches generated without an account are kept on our server for 7 days; download the files you need.)

Is there a scan limit for the barcodes?

No, there is no scan limit. The generated barcodes can be scanned an unlimited number of times.

My barcode is not working. What can I do?

There could be several reasons for a barcode not working:

  • Check for typos in the encoded data
  • Ensure the barcode is printed clearly without any smudges or distortions.
  • Verify the scanner is compatible with the type of barcode you are using.

For EAN-13, UPC, EAN-8 and ITF-14, a missing check digit is added automatically, and a full number is validated, so an invalid check digit is rejected.

Can I customize the design and colors of my barcode?

Yes. You can set the bar and background colors, bar width, height, whether to show the text, and the text font, size, alignment and position. You can also add a filename prefix.

How can I ensure the best print quality for my barcode?

For the best print quality, choose a larger bar width and height, and download SVG for sharp printing at any size. The .svg format is recommended for maintaining design settings and compatibility with most vector graphic software.

What are the specifications and typical uses for each barcode type?

  • CODE128
    Specifications: High-density linear barcode symbology, can encode all 128 ASCII characters, supports three character sets (A, B, and C).
